Pamukkale & Salda Lake – 1-Day Trip with a Thermal Hotel Night
Two unhurried days instead of one exhausting one: the Taurus crossing, turquoise Salda Lake, a barefoot walk on Pamukkale's white terraces, the ruins of Hierapolis, a thermal hotel evening and the Red Water springs on the way home.

Picture a hillside that looks snow-covered in the middle of summer, with warm water trickling over it into shallow, milky pools. That is Pamukkale – “cotton castle” in Turkish – and above it lie the ruins of Hierapolis, a spa town that flourished under the Romans around the same hot springs. Together they are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and they are well worth the long road from the coast.
Why this trip takes two days
Pamukkale lies about 380 km from Alanya, so a same-day return would mean most of the day on the bus and barely an hour at the terraces. We split the journey instead: the bus leaves at around 05:30, you spend the afternoon at the sites, sleep in a thermal hotel and travel back the next day with a few stops on the way. Our guides speak English, German, Russian and Turkish.
Day one: Salda, the terraces and Hierapolis
After the climb over the Taurus Mountains the bus stops in Korkuteli for breakfast, then at Salda Lake – a deep mountain lake with water so turquoise and shores so white that Turks jokingly call it their own Maldives. In the afternoon you take off your shoes and walk up the travertines, layers of limestone left behind as the calcium-heavy spring water cools on its way down the slope. At the top you explore Hierapolis: a huge theatre, colonnaded streets and a vast necropolis lined with tombs. If you fancy a swim among sunken marble columns, the Antique Pool – known as Cleopatra’s Pool – is open to visitors for an extra fee.
Thermal evening, Red Water morning
The night is spent in a 3-star thermal hotel with dinner and breakfast included, so after the walk you can sink into warm mineral water before bed. On day two you visit Karahayıt, where iron in the spring water has stained the rocks a rusty red, then a village mosque and a carpet workshop where weavers knot rugs by hand. After a lunch stop and a scenic break the bus heads back to the coast and reaches Alanya at around 17:30, depending on traffic.
Choosing your package
Both packages include transport, the guide, the hotel night and half board. With the cheaper one (adults €50, children €25) you buy the Pamukkale–Hierapolis ticket on site; with the other (adults €60, children €30) it is already included. Lunches, drinks, the Antique Pool and the Red Water entrance are paid separately either way. Pack your passport or ID for the hotel, an overnight bag, swimwear and a towel, plus a bag for your shoes on the terraces. Hungry for more? Combine this trip with two days among Cappadocia's fairy chimneys or the ancient theatre on our Aspendos and Side day trip.

Frequently asked questions

At around 380 km each way, a day trip leaves very little time at the terraces. Staying overnight gives you a whole afternoon at the sites and an easier ride home.
What exactly does the entrance package add?
The ticket for Pamukkale and Hierapolis. The Antique Pool and the Red Water entrance are not part of it and are paid on site.
Which meals are covered?
Dinner and breakfast at the thermal hotel. The two lunches on the road are at your own expense.
Is swimwear worth packing?
Yes – for the hotel's thermal water, and for the Antique Pool if you decide to swim there.
What ID will I need?
Your passport or a national ID card; the hotel asks for it at check-in.
