Cappadocia in Two Days from Alanya – Fairy Chimneys, Underground City and Balloons
A long but rewarding journey into Central Anatolia: a multi-level underground city, Pigeon Valley, fairy chimneys and the view from Uçhisar, Avanos pottery, a 4-star hotel night and, at dawn, a sky full of hot-air balloons.

- Cappadocia
Shortly after 05:30 on the second morning, the sky above Cappadocia starts to fill: first one balloon, then dozens, then so many you stop counting, drifting over valleys of pale rock shaped like cones, towers and mushrooms. It is one of the great sights of Turkey – and the reason so many guests are happy to make the long trip inland from the coast.
Why we leave at 04:15
Cappadocia lies about 540 km from Alanya, roughly eight hours by bus each way including breaks. To give you a full afternoon among the rock formations, the coach leaves very early on Tuesdays and Fridays, with a breakfast stop around 07:00. The way home on day two runs via Konya, and you are back at your hotel at about 20:30.
Day one: below and above the ground
The first visit takes you down into an underground city – several storeys of tunnels, stables, storerooms and wine cellars where whole communities once sheltered from raiders; the entrance is included in both packages. After lunch near Uçhisar you see Pigeon Valley, where hundreds of dovecotes are cut into the cliffs, walk among the fairy chimneys – soft volcanic tuff sculpted by wind and rain – and stop below Uçhisar Castle, the highest point of the area, for the big panorama.
Crafts, dinner and an optional show
Late in the afternoon you watch potters at work in Avanos, a town known for the clay of the Kızılırmak river, and taste Turkish delight before checking into a 4-star hotel for dinner. If you still have energy, a Turkish night with music and dance is available as an extra.
Sunrise and the road home
Day two starts before dawn for those who want it: you can watch the balloons from a viewpoint (€40) or fly in one yourself – flights depend on the weather, are priced on request and are confirmed the evening before. After breakfast there is a last look over the valleys and a visit to a carpet workshop, and then the coach turns south.
Packages and extras
The Standard package (adults €80, children €50) covers the hotel night with dinner and breakfast plus the underground city; Full board (adults €120, children €75) adds lunch on both days. A single room costs €25 extra. Other museum tickets, drinks and tips are not included, and the group follows the guide’s schedule, so individual changes are not possible. Bring your passport or ID for the hotel, an overnight bag, sturdy shoes and a warm layer – mornings in Cappadocia are cool. Hungry for more of Turkey’s interior? Our two days at Pamukkale and Salda Lake lead to a very different landscape, and the Demre and Kekova trip combines ruins with the sea.
